(Hong Kong) - Nightlife at Lan Kwai Fong

The Lan Kwai Fong of Hong Kong is a district of the territory; but it is a district with difference: it is a food and nightlife district. In terms of territory and political concerns, the Lan Kwai Fong is an L-shaped street. Located midway between Hong Kong's Central and Western District, Lan Kwai Fong of Hong Kong is almost like a rabbit's warren with mazes and labyrinthine lanes revealing premium bars, nightclubs and restaurants. From the west end, the Lan Kwai Fong in Hong Kong extends its two right-angled arms of Wo On Lane and Wing Wah Lane that further branch out more lanes and by-lanes as it proceeds further.

A hawker territory prior to the World War-II, the Lan Kwai Fong in Hong Kong underwent metamorphoses in the 1980s. However, at one time before the era of the hawkers, the area was called the "Mui Yan Hon" or the 'medium person lane'. It was so named because it was a residential area for the "mui yan" or the 'marriage arrangers'. These 'mui yan' were women who worked as a medium between families and chalked out the negotiations of marriage. The area experienced change only after Allan Zeman bought and remodeled a building in the area turning it into restaurants serving western cuisine. Zeman invested around 32 million Hong Kong dollars into the project. Initially, these restaurants in Lan Kwai Fong in Hong Kong, served as places of rendezvous for westerners and other foreigners; but eventually the area expanded its scope to become the leading wining and dining district of Hong Kong. Because of the revolutionary change Zeman brought about, the German-Canadian man of affairs is held as the 'Father of Lan Kwai Fong'.
